ROSACEA

Rosacea is a skin disease that causes redness (due to small blood vessels) and bumps on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead, as well as irritated, watery eyes. It affects millions of people around the world and is often left undiagnosed. Rosacea may have a tremendous impact on people’s personal/social life and on their professional performance. Rosacea predominantly affects people with a fair skin complexion. The disease may come and go with frequent acute episodes also called “flares”. These flare-ups usually happen when some “trigger factor” causes the blood vessels to expand and produce redness. Some common triggers are: sun exposure, alcohol, coffee, spicy food, chocolate, exercise, and hot showers or baths. In some cases, it is difficult to identify any specific trigger. If untreated, Rosacea can get progressively worse. In some rare cases Rosacea can cause bumps and enlarged blood vessels on the nose giving the nose swollen or “strawberry-like” appearance. Even though Rosacea cannot be completely cured, it can be well-controlled. Avoidance of the triggers can control the disease in some cases and prevent the flare-ups. Any person with Rosacea should avoid prolonged sun exposure and use a sunscreen with SPF 30 or more. There are several treatment options available to and keep Rosacea under control:

    • Topical creams like glycolic acid, vitamins, and tretinoin
    • Antibiotic creams or pills
    • Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

The treatment of each particular case of Rosacea should be carefully tailored for your specific condition and age. Call us to arrange for your complimentary consultation.
