WRINKLES

As we continue to age, wrinkles begin to appear on our skin. There are two components in the skin aging process: “internal aging”, which is programmed in our genes and “external aging,” caused by external harmful factors (smoking, dehydration, unprotected UV exposure, air pollution, and many others). With age, the number of superficial skin cells decreases by about 10% per decade; collagen production gradually slows as well, resulting in a decrease in the thickness and firmness of the skin. Also with aging, the ability of the skin to retain moisture and produce an appropriate amount of skin oil is lessened. All these changes make skin thinner, dryer, less elastic, producing wrinkles and folds. Unfortunately, it is impossible to reverse our “internal aging”, but the “external aging” can be prevented and modified. It is crucial to maintain a healthy life style, quit smoking, drink enough water, and wear a sunscreen with SPF 30 or more to prevent wrinkles. There are several non-surgical options available to correct wrinkles:

Also, there are two types of wrinkles: fine surface “texture” wrinkles and deep “dynamic” wrinkles related to muscle contractions (frown lines, smile lines, etc). It is important to choose the right treatment for your specific wrinkles. If you are considering treatment for your wrinkles, ask your doctor which procedure is right for your age, skin type, and personal expectations. Call us to arrange your complimentary consultation.
